LíderCon 2024: Advancing Leadership, Strengthening Our Community

Updated: 7 days ago

LíderCon 2024 was an unforgettable gathering of Latine leaders, professionals, and change-makers committed to advancing leadership and creating a more inclusive and equitable future. Held over two days, LíderCon brought together individuals from across sectors and industries, united by a shared vision of collective power, growth, and community.

This year’s theme, “Avanzando Liderazgo”, underscored the shared responsibility to not only excel as leaders but to lift one another as we push boundaries and elevate our voices. LíderCon offered a wealth of opportunities for learning, inspiration, networking, and celebration – making it a standout event in Minnesota’s leadership landscape.

From the moment attendees walked through the doors, they were embraced by a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere. The space was expertly designed to spark connections, creativity, and collaboration. In partnership with our incredible host sponsors, Best Buy, we didn’t just set the stage— we created an unforgettable experience together!

This year's LíderCon MC was our very own LatinoLEAD Board Chair, Esther Ledesma,  Director, Human Resources – Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Corporate Giving at Xcel Energy.  We’re grateful for her incredible energy and leadership in guiding our conference with purpose and making every moment impactful. We also want to recognize Ana Tafur, Associate Product Manager and ERG Chair of Best Buy and Patricia Hyack, Compensation Manager at Best Buy  and the entire Best Buy ERG Team, for their commitment and leadership to assisting LatinoLEAD with hosting our 4th annual LíderCon 2024 at Best Buy’s Headquarters in Richfield, Minnesota!

In a powerful testament to our collective mission, over 427 Lideres Latines joined us, with a record-breaking attendance of 16.67% increase from LíderCon 2023. Latines and allies gathered to participate, learn, and grow. LatinoLEAD also welcomed the stage CEO of Best Buy, Corie Barry, where she welcomed the general assembly to the conference’s first day and recognized Best Buy’s commitment to invest in ourselves as leaders and to embrace our uniqueness. Best Buy's Chief of Diversity and Inclusion, Amelia Hardy, kicked us off on Day Two, to ground us on the importance of connecting with our community and fellow leaders. Our host sponsors, Best Buy, went above and beyond to provide an environment where leaders could thrive, learn, and grow together.

Inspiring Keynote Speakers

The keynote presentations were nothing short of inspiring. Each speaker shared stories of resilience, leadership, and determination, motivating attendees to embrace their own leadership journeys. From the importance of community engagement to the role of equity in leadership, our keynote speakers left us with actionable insights and a renewed sense of purpose.

Former CEO of Girl Scouts of the USA & NASA Engineer: Sylvia Acevedo

LíderCon 2024 was honored to present our opening keynote speaker: Former CEO of Girl Scouts of the USA & NASA Engineer, Sylvia Acevedo. Acevedo is an absolute powerhouse in every sense of the word, an engineer and businesswoman whose remarkable career has spanned both the corporate and public sectors.  The “Path to the Stars” began her journey as a systems engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where she was a member of the Voyager 2 team, contributing to one of humanity's most significant space explorations.

From 2016 to 2020, Acevedo served as the CEO of the Girl Scouts of the USA, where she transformed the organization by introducing over 146 new STEM and leadership badges, empowering countless young girls to reach for the stars. Her bestselling memoir, 'Path to the Stars: My Journey from Girl Scout to Rocket Scientist,' is a testament to her perseverance and dedication. Acevedo’s story is one of breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations, and we are incredibly fortunate to have her with us today to share her insights and experiences.

Later in the evening on Day One The President of Constituent Relations and Racial Equity at Walmart: Tony Waller.

Tony Waller is the Vice President, Constituent Relations and Racial Equity for Walmart in Bentonville, Arkansas. In his position he sets strategy for driving reputation, augmenting outreach opportunities, and maximizing social investments in diverse and multicultural communities. His portfolio includes the African American, Hispanic, Asian American & Pacific Islander and Native American communities as well as Women, People with Disabilities and Emerging Generations. Waller is also tasked with being a critical “integrator” engaging across Corporate Affairs teams, with real depth in helping to shape public policy, comms strategy, federal and state government relations, and community relations through a racial equity lens. Additionally, Tony and his team help lead efforts to expand the company’s racial equity efforts across all of the diverse and multicultural communities of focus. The LíderCon 2024 general assembly will always remember his mother’s words, “Keep flowing with The River for The River knows exactly where It is going.”

Waller reminded the leaders in our general assembly that leadership is not just about individual success, but about collective progress. It is about working together to create a better future for all. From his own success, our second keynote speaker ended with a powerful call to action: to continue to mentor and support the next generation of leaders. Share our knowledge, our experiences, and our wisdom. By lifting others up, we create a ripple effect that can transform our communities and our world.

May we all inspire those around us for a brighter future and flow with the river.

Kicking us off on Day Two we had Senior Vice President & Relationship Manager at U.S. Bank Carlos Lamboglia.

Carlos is a Relationship Manager in U.S. Bancorp’s Automotive & Transportation Banking practice. In his role, Carlos leads a portfolio of investment grade, large corporate and mid-corporate clients. His responsibilities include structuring and underwriting debt transactions and assisting clients with a variety of banking products and services. Carlos is a three-time recipient of the U.S. Bank’s Legends of Possible Award. Currently, Carlos serves on the Board of the Latino Economic Development Center (LEDC), a Community Development Financial Institution, that serves the Latino small business community in Minnesota.

Carlos Lamboglia was joined by DEI Strategy Program Manager at U.S. Bank Nancy L. Alvarado Hazleton.

Nancy had the opportunity to directly serve her community. Throughout her roles at U.S. Nancy has continually focused on helping customers meet their financial goals with empathy, respect, and understanding. Nancy currently serves as an Assistant Vice President - DEI Strategy Program Manager at U.S. Bank. She spends her days partnering and collaborating with leaders in the community and U.S. Bank to create access to inclusive growth through the U.S. Bank’s commitment to empowering our community, employees, and customers. Beyond her formal role, Nancy is also a founding member and former president of the U.S. Bank’s Nosotros Latinos Business Resource Group. Outside of work, Nancy joined the Minnesota Latino Economic Development Center Lending Committee with the goal and mission to help advocate for Latinx Small Business owners to build their American dream. Additionally, Nancy was recognized as a 2022 HACR Young Hispanic Corporate Achiever.

Together, Alvarado-Hazelton and Lamboglia answered the general assembly’s questions about the “Translators” film. This powerful documentary, directed by Rudy Valdez, sheds light on the experiences of over 11 million children across the U.S., like Densel, Harye, and Virginia, who act as translators for their families in situations far beyond their years. It’s a moving reminder of the resilience and strength within our communities. Our keynote presenters connected the conference’s theme to the film’s by reminding us it's important to also recognize the unique roles that many young people in our communities take on—roles that transcend age and expectation.

Our general assembly shared this moment as a nod to some of our childhoods with similar family needs and dynamics. We send an abrazo to everyone that could relate to the stories told in “Translators.”

Closing our conference as a keynote speaker was the Principal & Co-Founder of The Raben Group, LLC | President/CEO of Friends of the National Museum of the American Latino: Estuardo Rodriguez.

Estaurdo Rodriguez is a powerhouse in the world of government affairs and strategic communications, but his impact extends far beyond these professional titles. He is a principal and co-founder at The Raben Group, where he works on advising some of the world’s leading companies on how to engage with Congress, the White House, and key policymakers.

Estuardo’s work has consistently centered around outreach, representation, and empowerment for Latine communities. From building a Spanish-language media network to support presidential campaigns at the Democratic National Committee, to his influential work at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Estuardo has always used his platforms to create meaningful change.

As the President and CEO of the Friends of the American Latino Museum, his vision led to the establishment of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Latino—an achievement that will forever preserve 500 years of American Latino history on our National Mall.

Fluent in both Spanish and the language of politics, Estuardo’s influence extends far and wide, from major corporate clients to the halls of Congress, to the media where he regularly shares his insights as a political commentator. He’s a co-founder of the Hispanic Lobbyists Association and serves on several nonprofit boards, always keeping the empowerment of the Latine community at the forefront of his work.

After Estuardo shared the vision for the Friends of the American Latino Museum, Aarón Johnson-Ortíz, an artist, muralist and cultural manager, shared his dream for a similar local endeavor: (Neo)Muralismos de Mexico. This project initiative involves a museum plan that calls for two spacious art galleries to present exhibitions by local and visiting artists; an outdoor sculpture park and mural garden; public programming for music, folk art, poetry and dance classes; historical displays with an emphasis on the West Side Flats; gardening spaces; and a greenhouse with interactive exhibits about medicinal plants, crops, and culturally specific flowers and plants.  This is a place where visitors would be able to learn about the rich history and culture of the Latino community in Minnesota and how it has enriched the state, while also being a place where all Minnesotans can gather.

Get involved with this initiative with your support, attend our events, write letters of support and get connected with  (Neo)Muralismos de México in Minnesota!
